ATP roundup: Stefanos Tsitsipas wins first match in Hamburg

 


00:57:59 GMT+00:00 - 2021-07-15 00:57:59 GMT+00:00 - On Wednesday at the Hamburg European Open in Germany, top seed Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece needed a first-set tiebreak before defeating Germany's Dominik Koepfer 7-6 (2), 6-3.

It was Tsitsipas' first match since losing to American Frances Tiafoe in the first round of Wimbledon. He won 86 percent of his first-serve points (30 of 35) en route to his tour-best 40th victory of the season.

Tsitsipas will meet Serbian No. 6 seed Filip Krajinovic in the quarterfinals, after the Serbian defeated German wild card Philipp Kohlschreiber 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 on Wednesday. Laslo Djere, a fellow Serbian, also won, defeating Thiago Seyboth Wild of Brazil 7-6 (1), 6-1.

On Wednesday, American No. 2 seed Sam Querrey lost to countryman Maxime Cressy, one of four seeded players to exit the tournament in Newport, R.I.

In the pair's first career head-to-head match, Cressy won 6-4, 2-6, 6-2. Jenson Brooksby, who defeated fellow American Denis Kudla, and Jack Sock, who stunned No. 3 seed Yoshihito Nishioka 6-2, 6-3, will join him in the quarterfinals.

German Peter Gojowczyk knocked out Canadian No. 4 seed Vasek Pospisil 6-3, 6-3, and Jason Jung of Chinese Taipei beat American No. 5 seed Tennys Sandgren 6-2, 6-2.

No. 1 seed Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan needed three sets to avoid following his fellow seeded players out the door. He beat Croatia's Ivo Karlovic 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-1. No. 7 seed Jordan Thompson of Australia and No. 8 seed Kevin Anderson of South Africa also advanced.

On his route to a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Spain's Pedro Martinez in Bastad, Sweden, No. 2 seed Cristian Garin converted four of six break points and won 75 percent of his first-serve points.

Chile's Garin has advanced to the quarterfinals, where he will face another South American, Argentina's Federico Coria. Coria defeated Marco Cecchinato of Italy 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the final.

In Bastad, two seeded players were defeated. Fourth-seeded Australian John Millman was defeated 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 by Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech. Yannick Hanfmann of Germany eliminated No. 7 in the standings. Czech Republic's Jiri Vesely won 6-4, 6-3.
